走上狹窄的鵝卵石小道
'Neath the halo of a street lamp.
在街燈的光暈下方前進
I turned my collar to the cold & damp.
我捲起衣領阻擋潮濕嚴寒
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light.
當我雙眼被一道霓虹光芒刺入
That split the night.
這光芒劃破了暗夜
And touched the sound of silence.
並與寂靜之聲相觸
And in the naked night I saw .
深夜之中我看到
Ten thousand people maybe more.
數以萬計甚至更多的人
People talking without speaking.
如此多的人道而不言
People hearing without listening.
如此多的人聽而不聞
People writing songs that voices never share.
人們正書寫著自私自利的樂章
And no one dare.
也沒有人敢
Disturb the sound of silence.
打破這份寂靜之聲
'Fool' said I 'U do not know.
“愚人啊”，我說“你們還不懂嗎”
'Silence like a cancer grows.
“沉默只如惡疾肆意生長”
'Hear my words that I might teach U.
“有益的教誨你們當聽取”
'Take my arms that I might reach U.
“有助的臂膀你們當挽起”
But my words like silent rain-drops fell.
但我的話像雨滴無聲墜下
And echoed in the wells of silence.
在一座座沉寂的井中漸漸模糊
And the people bow & prayed.
人們還是盲目地鞠躬祈禱
To the neon God they made.
俯首向自己所造的霓虹之神
And the sign flash out its warning.
告示牌上閃爍著叮囑告誡
In the words that it was forming.
若隱若現的神諭詞句中
And the sign said 'The words of the prophets.
上面寫著“先知們的箴言
Are written on the subway walls & tenement halls
就塗鴉在地鐵大牆及公寓走廊上”
And whispered in the sounds of silence .
並且輕聲傳送在寂靜之聲中【先知們的箴言指流浪漢與貧民在牆上塗鴉心中的不滿，霓虹之神指現代的人類發明霓虹的照亮黑暗，卻又刺了人的雙眼，人們追求慾望而對歌者的警醒充耳不聞，最後變成寂靜之音】
